In July, Barking Riverside Limited (BRL) hosted a community event with the Barking Food Forest, a project by Thames Life, to celebrate the completion of improvement works on Handley Page Road, which has made the area safer and more welcoming for residents.
As part of these works, new planters have sprouted up, creating more greenery whilst controlling vehicle movements in the area. The works have also created a
new parklet, which have replaced unauthorised parking with a seating area, which is decorated with plants. It’s been brilliant to see residents already enjoying this new
space for relaxing and socialising. Over 40 residents rolled up their sleeves and joined us to help plant up the brand-new parklet and raised flower beds on Handley Page Road with a selection of colourful plants. The event took place on the hottest day of the year so far and so the homemade lemonade, provided by local favourite Café Couleur, was greatly appreciated and enjoyed by all.
Many also took part in some cycling to earn their own fresh juice on a smoothie bike, which was organised by Barking-based small business Empress Juicery. Nikhil Rathore from Barking Food Forest, who led the workshop, commented: “It was great to see so many local people getting involved with the planting workshop, helping make the space greener for everyone who lives here. The event was a huge success, and we look forward to seeing people enjoying the new
parklet area.” A resident that attended the event said: “We have had such a brilliant time out here planting in the sunshine today. We are really excited to see our plants grow and flourish.” Thank you to everyone who helped green Handley Page Road. The parklet is now open for the public to enjoy.
